The 2008 Sustainable Cities Programme /Local Agenda 21 Regional Meetings took place between 26- 28 August in: Manila, Philippines; 11-12 August in Mombasa, Kenya and 3-5 September in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
UNEP and UN-HABITAT Launch Publications extending “Local Action for Biodiversity”

UN-HABITAT and UNEP, in collaboration with the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) on Wednesday launched two publications with selected case studies from around the world on cities, ecosystems and biodiversity.

The UN-HABITAT Sustainable Cities Programme targets on the improvement of living conditions of urban dwellers in developing countries by introducing a bottom-up planning approach. To improve the flow of information among the different stakeholders involved and to enable the local community to participate in urban planning, some Sustainable Cities Programme partner cities set up a Geographic Information System-based Environmental Management Information System.

Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, this week told the 22nd governing council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UN-HABITAT’s sister organisation, that the two Nairobi-based UN bodies would work with a “profound sense of common purpose” to strengthen the nexus between the natural and human-made evironments of the world.
