The Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, on Monday received the new Permanent Representative of Sweden to the agency, Ms. Anna Brandt.
Mrs. Tibaijuka said that Sweden was one of the top ten leading financial contributors to UN-HABITAT and a great supporter of its leadership. She said that the Swedish International Development Cooperation (Sida) has helped UN-HABITAT establish the Global Land Tool Network for the development of tools to enable women and the poor have access to land. She stated that Sida has also been supporting the land sector in Kenya, which is being coordinated by the Land and Tenure Section of UN-HABITAT.
While congratulating the new envoy, Mrs. Tibaijuka briefed her on improvements being made to the United Nations Human Settlements Foundation to make it more effective.
In response, Ms. Brandt said that Sweden supports the work of UN-HABITAT in recognition of its importance. She also congratulated Mrs. Tibaijuka on her appointment as the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
Ms. Brandt was the Head of the African Department of the Swedish Foreign Ministry for many years.
Also present at the occasion were the Deputy Permanent Representative of Sweden to UN-HABITAT, Ms. Petra Ahman; the Deputy Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, Ms. Inga Bjork-Klevby; and the Director, Global Division, Mr. Lars Reutersward.
