Background and Objectives
This programme co-funded by the Ministry de l'Aménagement du Territoire et de l'Urbanisme supports the cities of Saint Louis , Matam, Guediawaye and Tivaouane and the consolidation of the Louga Local Agenda 21 . The Institut Africain de Gestion Urbaine (IAGU) as national and regional environmental planning and management anchoring institution will provide most of the technical support and will lead the adaptation of the environmental planning and management tools to the Senegalese context. The Senegal National Programme is supporting the implementation of the Global Campaign on Urban Governance which was launched in Senegal in May 2004.
Activities
The programme supports:
- Strengthening the capacities of local authorities and their partners to prepare and implement Local Agendas 21
- Strengthening the technical support capacity of the Institut Africain de Gestion Urbaine to assist municipalities in developing Local Agenda 21 processes
- Facilitating the dialogue between local authorities and national government on policy issues related to urban development, environmental management and poverty reduction
- Supporting Senegal to acquire sustained mechanisms to promote and assist the preparation of Local Agendas 21 through the creation of a Senegal Committee 21.
