PLANNING NEEDED AS COMMONWEALTH CITIES DOUBLE IN SIZE IN A GENERATION  

By 2025, UN projections suggest that almost 1.2 billion people will be living in the Commonwealth’s urban areas. Today the figure is about three-quarters of a billion. Every day it increases by 65,000.

On behalf of President Obama, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, the entire Administration and all Americans, let me say that it is an honor to host this year’s World Habitat Day.

Welcome to Washington DC. I want to thank everyone who is celebrating World Habitat Day across the country and around the world. And I want to thank Secretary (of Housing and Urban Development Shaun) Donovan and (UN-HABITAT Executive Director) Dr (Anna) Tibaijuka of the United Nations for making this day possible.

His Highness called upon the international community to mobilize resources and effectively contribute in planning to in create a physical livable environment enabling the urban poor to live in a safe and sustainable environment.

The theme of this year’s observance of World Habitat Day, Planning our Urban Future, is meant to underscore the urgency of meeting the needs of city dwellers in a rapidly urbanizing world.

Statement of the Executive Director, UN-HABITAT On the occasion of World Habitat Day 2009  

We have chosen the theme, Planning our Urban Future, for World Habitat Day 2009 for a simple but very important reason: In many parts of our world urban planning systems have changed very little. Indeed, they are often contributors to urban problems rather than tools for human and environmental improvement.
