The Development Partners Working Group on Decentralisation & Local Governance (DeLoG) held its 8th Annual Meeting in New York last month, hosted by UN-Habitat, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).

UN-HABITAT and six United Nations agencies have teamed up with the Government of Iraq to launch a new initiative aimed at boosting the capacities of local authorities to carry through development plans in partnership with the private sector and local communites.

The programme will be conducted in Sulaymaniyah, Babel, and the Marshlands in a bid to stimulate local economic development and improve local infrastructure and basic services, the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said in a news release.

Mr. Fouad Saad Eldin, Governor of Ismailia, will honour the opening ceremony of the Workshop on 20 May 2005 . The agreement is aimed essentially at localizing the Millennium Development Goals to which world leaders committed themselves in the year 2000.
