Seoul, 5 Nov 13
The mayor of Seoul Mr. Mayor Won Soon Park has been appointed the regional chair of the steering committee of the UN-Habitat Global Network on Safer Cities.

Making the announcement, UN-Habitat Executive Director Dr. Joan Clos said Mr. Park was chosen to provide guidance and advocate the objectives of the Network in the Asia Pacific region and globally.

"In this context, your role as regional chair is premised on your desire and commitment to contribute to the United Nations’ efforts to raise awareness of the aims, objectives and priorities of the Safer Cities Programme of UN-Habitat, and particularly to convey messages about its activities and to extend the public outreach of the Global Network on Safer Cities, including the World Urban Campaign efforts on sustainable urban development," Dr. Clos said.

Dr. Clos expressed the hope that Mr. Park will be able to join the Habitat III conference, which will take place in 2016, in his capacity as the appointed regional chair of the Steering Committee of the Global Network on Safer Cities. He added: Given your strong commitment to city leadership, and citizens participation impacting on the safety in your city, I know that you will be a compelling and eloquent advocate in focusing attention on these and related issues. I am confident that the prestige, talent and presence that you will bring to these issues will help the Safer Cities Programme of UN-Habitat to send a powerful message that will reach the hearts and minds of people throughout the world."

On his part Mr. Park expressed his appreciation for the appointment which he said was not only an honour to him personally but the people of Seoul and Republic of Korea in general.
