Urban development experts from national, regional and city governments, international organizations and academia gathered in Barcelona this week to discuss innovative approaches to the management of urban growth in rapidly urbanizing cities of the developing world.

The meeting was part of on-going debate ‘Planning Cities Extensions – Public and Private Space for Expanding Cities’. Titled ‘Progressive and Equitable Urban Extension: Adapting progressive and equitable basic urban plans for growing cities in developing countries’, the meeting saw lively discussions and debates with participants sharing ideas and experiences.

Building on the experience of the participants, recent researches and analysis of case studies from several countries, the participants examined options and solutions to the urban crisis faced by many developing countries. They identified a number of key measures that cities and their partners should consider in order to address the present patterns of rapid urban growth in context of limited economic development.
