Somaliland, 7 Nov 12
As a part of a local government capacity-building programme, UN-Habitat this year conducted a series of trainings on Local Leadership Management, Conflict Management, and Gender and the Involvement of Women in Local Governance in Gabiley (Somaliland), Bossaso (Puntland), and Jariban (Puntland). Under the umbrella of the capacity-building strategy of the UN Joint Programme on Local Governance and Decentralized Service Delivery, these training activities focused on strengthening local leaders’ conflict management, reconciliation, and leadership skills, building peace, and contributing to more transparent, accountable, and participatory local governance. Prior to this training, a training-of-trainers workshop on Gender and the Involvement of Women in Local Governance in the Somali Region was conducted in Garowe. The total number of participants for the various trainings was 298, 22 percent of them women. A similar training package is scheduled for the last quarter of this year in Bander Beyla and Eyl Districts in Puntland.
